Archaeological Field Survey in the Upper Vjosa Valley

In September 2017, CeRPHAAL, in collaboration with the University of ‘Aleksandër Xhuvani’ in Elbasan, carried out an extensive and intensive field survey extended across a wider area on the fields and hilly terrains on both sides of the Vjosa Valley. The results yielded material scatters and building remains that were important for locating potential archaeological sites of varying chronology and typology across the territory.

Another key objective of this year’s work was to survey the pastoral sites in the higher terrains of the valley. Therefore, several animal encampments were observed, and data were collected regarding their construction features, as well as on past and present animal husbandry practices and strategies.

As in the previous years, a group of students participated in the fieldwork, receiving training in field survey methodologies, documentation, material recording, and mapping.
