Archaeological excavation at the site of Magjerica
The second season of archaeological excavation in the Upper Vjosa Valley was carried out during August and September 2016 at the site of Magjerica. It was a collaborative project between CeRPHAAL and the University of ‘Aleksandër Xhuvani’ in Elbasan.
This year’s excavation focused on three main areas of the site, each reflecting distinct phases of habitation: at Roman Villa and Late Roman occupation, at the medieval house, and at St. Mary church.
Additionally, in partnership with Prof. Leonor Peña Chocarro and Dr. Guillem Perez Jorda from the Archaeobotanical Laboratory at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), soil samples from excavations were assemble and floated, recovering important archaeobotanical that will go further analysis at the CSIC laboratory.
As part of the project, a training program was organized for the participating students, focusing on hands-on fieldwork methodologies, documentation techniques, mapping, and material analysis
